Chandigarh, February 10: Panjab University is planning to devise a system wherein 25 per cent weightage would be given to marks obtained in Class XII and 75 per cent to the CET score for admission to various courses. The proposal was introduced at a meeting held today and it will be discussed at a Syndicate meeting on February 12.

The Common Entrance Test is conducted for admission to various courses including MBBS at Government Medical College and Hospital, BDS at Dr Harvansh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences, BAMS at Shri Dhanwantry Ayurvedic College, BHMS at Homeopathic Medical College, B Pharmacy at University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, BA-LLB five-year integrated course and BSc (Honours School) in different departments of PU.

According to the proposal, except for the BA-LLB entrance test, in all other exams, weightage would be given to marks obtained in Class XII exams. For admission to courses where admission is based on marks obtained in three subjects, merit would be calculated out of 480. Marks obtained in three subjects would be calculated out of 360. The total marks obtained in Class XII would be calculated out of 120.

For admission to BSc (Honours School) in Maths and BSc (Maths) and Computing, where admission is based on marks obtained in Mathematics in CET, marks obtained would be calculated out of 120. The marks obtained in Class XII would be calculated out of 40. The merit for admission would thus be out of 160.

The decision if approved, would be significant because in most of the entrance exams, weightage is not given to Class XII marks and admission is based only on the test score. Due to this, students tend to focus more on coaching classes.
