Courtsey driving week, UT cops say no to challans

Chandigarh, November 5 City motorists were surprised to see Chandigarh Traffic police officials, making an attempt at educating residents on the violations, instead of issuing challans and fines. The Chandigarh Police has decided to observe a “Courtesy Driving Week”. The drive was inaugurated at Chandigarh Traffic Park, Sector 23, on Monday.The Traffic Police plans to issue minimum number of challans and instead stress more on educating the populace about traffic rules and regulations. The police officials believe that such moves will enhance awareness on traffic rules.

“Our sole aim is to make people understand the road-safety norms,” said SSP (Traffic) AS Ahlawat. Senior officials of Chandigarh Police attended the inauguration ceremony. The theme of Courtesy Driving Week is to educate the general public about road safety and discipline.

After the inauguration ceremony, traffic police officials also displayed road safety banners and placards and also distributed road safety literature to the road users. College and school students helped them in the task. Special nakas were also organisd to check speed-limit violation and other miscellaneous traffic offences, where no challans were issued.

The drive will continue till November 11.
